Old town

Stara Varos (old town) has preserved the architectural style as it has been for decades and even centuries. Many residents say that Stara Varos is the heart of Podgorica. Narrow streets, buildings hundreds of years old, mosques from the Ottoman era, clock tower, all this is part of the Old Town. Today, more can be seen in the Old Town than we think. The clock tower was built at the end of the 17th century. It was built by Hadži Mehmed-pasha Osmanagić. It is 16 meters high. The clock tower is the most beautiful example of architecture left over from the Turkish period. The Osmanagić mosque was built at the end of the 18th century by Hadži Mehmed-pasha Osmanagić, at the same time as the Clock Tower was built. Mehmed Pasha's tomb is also located in her yard. Skender Čauševa-Starodoganjska mosque, which is also located in Stara Varoš, dates from the 15th century and was built by Skender Čauš. In Stara Varoš is one of the oldest houses in Podgorica. It used to be called the loggia of Krpuljević, and today, there is a restaurant in this house. According to some data, it was made at the end of the sixteenth or the beginning of the seventeenth century. Some other sources say that it was built in 1826, during the time of the Turks. The Gallery of Risto Stijović (1894-1974), the greatest Montenegrin sculptor and founder of modern art in Montenegro, was founded in 1970. Risto Stijović has realized his work in five parts over many years. These are women, figures and figurines marked as an intimate sculpture, then a world of different experiences, the realm of extraordinary birds and animals. Then, he made numerous portraits of his friends and contemporaries, and personalities from “Gorski vijenac” who occupy a special whole in his great description, and, last but not least, he expressed his skills in several complexes that belong to his interest in monumental public sculpture. Cafe "Kaldrma" is a cafe, souvenir shop and gallery. This is the right place to go back in time and try homemade drinks and desserts as pomegranate juice, urmašica or patišpanj, you can see what Montenegrin national costumes look like and buy handmade magnets. :))
